Moon rocks have a reputation as one of the strongest ways to smoke cannabis, and the name fits. They look like little grey-brown space rocks, they burn slowly, and they hit far harder than ordinary flower. This guide explains what moon rock weed actually is, how it is made, how strong it really is, how to smoke it without wasting it, and how moon rocks compare with caviar and infused pre-rolls. It also covers the moonrock-style products we deliver same-day in Vancouver.

What is moon rock weed?
A moon rock is built in three layers:
- Flower. It starts with a nug of cannabis flower, usually a dense, good-quality bud.
- Oil. The nug is dipped in or painted with cannabis oil. Traditionally this was hash oil; today it is often THC distillate.
- Kief. The oily nug is rolled in kief, the fine, resin-rich powder of trichomes that collects in the bottom of a grinder. The oil works like glue, so the kief sticks and forms the dusty shell.
After coating, the rocks are usually left to dry for a while so the outside firms up. The result is a nug that looks nothing like normal bud: crusty, grey-gold and heavy for its size.
A short history of moon rocks
Coating flower in oil and kief is not a new idea, but moon rocks became a recognizable product in the mid-2010s, when the rapper Kurupt released his own branded moon rocks in California. The name caught on and spread quickly. Since then, “moon rock” has become a general term for almost any oil-and-kief-coated flower, and many brands make their own version. That is why quality and strength vary so much from one product to the next.
How strong are moon rocks?
Moon rocks are much stronger than regular flower because they stack three cannabis products on top of each other. Flower on its own usually tests somewhere in the 15% to 30% THC range. Oil and kief are both far more concentrated, so a finished moon rock can land well above that.
You will often see claims of 50% THC or higher. Treat those as rough marketing numbers. Each maker uses a different flower, a different oil and a different amount of kief, and there is no standard recipe or test. What is consistent is that moon rocks are heavy, long-lasting and not a beginner product.
Are moon rocks the strongest weed?
They are among the strongest ways to smoke flower, but they are not the most concentrated cannabis product available. Pure concentrates such as shatter, diamonds and distillate carry more THC per gram. Moon rocks sit in between: much stronger than flower, a little slower and more gradual than dabbing straight concentrate.
Does moon rock get you higher?
For most people, yes. A small amount delivers much more THC than the same amount of flower, and users commonly describe the high as heavier, longer and more body-focused. That is also why it is easy to overdo. Take one or two small puffs, then wait ten to fifteen minutes before having more.
Moon rock terpenes and flavour
A moon rock does not have its own terpene profile. Its flavour comes from three places:
- The base flower. An OG Kush base will taste earthy and piney; a fruity strain will taste sweeter. This is the main source of terpenes.
- The kief. Kief is made of trichomes, which is where terpenes are produced, so a good kief layer adds a lot of aroma.
- The oil. Pure distillate has almost no flavour on its own. Flavoured versions add terpenes or flavouring to the oil, which is how infused products get tastes like strawberry, caramel or vanilla.
Because the oil and kief burn quickly, the first draw from a moon rock is often the most flavourful. Lower heat helps preserve the taste.
How to smoke moon rocks
The oil and kief make moon rocks sticky and slow to burn. These tips make them much easier to enjoy:
- Break it up by hand or with scissors. A grinder will gum up. Pull the rock apart into small pieces instead.
- Use a pipe or bong with a screen. This is the most popular way. The screen stops sticky pieces falling through.
- Mix with regular flower. Sprinkle small pieces over a bowl or into a joint of plain flower. It burns more evenly and is much easier to dose.
- Use a wider, gentler flame. A hemp wick, or a lighter held a little further away, lights the outside without scorching it.
- Be patient between hits. The effects build, so wait before deciding you need more.
Can you smoke moon rock straight?
You can, but it is fiddly. A bowl of pure moon rock is hard to keep lit and very strong. Most people get a better experience mixing it with flower, or choosing a moonrock-style pre-roll that has already been blended and rolled to burn evenly.
Can you put moon rocks in a joint?
Yes, if you mix small pieces into regular flower. A joint of only moon rock tends to run, canoe and go out. Infused pre-rolls solve this by spreading the oil and kief through the whole joint.

| Infused pre-roll | Flower mixed or layered with distillate, kief or hash, then rolled | Smoked like a normal joint | Convenience and an even burn |
| Hash roll | A cone made from hash and filled with flower | Smoked like a joint, slowly | Hash fans who want a long, slow smoke |

| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very strong, so a little goes a long way | Easy to overdo, especially for newer users |
| Long-lasting effects | Sticky and hard to break up |
| Rich flavour from kief and flower | Slow and uneven to burn on its own |

How to store moon rocks and infused joints
- Airtight and cool. Keep them in an airtight container away from heat and light. Heat makes the oil runny and the outer kief layer messy.
- Not in a hot car. Warm weather can make infused joints sticky and uneven.
- Keep pre-rolls in their tube. The tube stops them getting crushed or drying out.
- Away from moisture. Damp storage can affect the kief layer and the burn.
- Secure from children and pets. Strong products need a safe spot.

FAQ
What is moon rock weed?
It is cannabis flower coated in cannabis oil and rolled in kief. The result is a dense, dusty-looking nug that is much stronger than flower on its own.
Are moon rocks the strongest weed?
They are one of the strongest ways to smoke flower, but pure concentrates like shatter and diamonds are more concentrated per gram.
Can you smoke moon rock straight?
Yes, in a pipe or bong with a screen, but it burns slowly and is very strong. Most people mix it with regular flower or choose an infused pre-roll.
Does moon rock get you higher than regular weed?
Usually, yes. It delivers much more THC per puff, so start with very small hits and wait before taking more.
What is the difference between moon rocks and caviar?
They are the same basic idea: flower plus oil plus kief. Some sellers use “caviar” for distillate-coated versions, but most people use the terms interchangeably.
Are moonrock pre-rolls good for beginners?
No. They are made for experienced users. If you are new to cannabis, start with regular flower or a low-strength product.
Why won’t my moon rock stay lit?
The oil and kief burn differently from flower. Break it into smaller pieces, mix it with regular flower and use a gentle, steady flame.
